 Dear Friends and Colleagues
Welcome to the fall 2011 Edition of the AACIO Newsletter. I hope the summer has been an enjoyable and peaceful one for all of you and your families despite some of the natural disasters that have occurred.
There are numerous advances in Cardiovascular Medicine and we are fortunate to be Cardiologists in these exciting times. Advances in imaging including echocardiography, MR and CT, transcatheter aortic valve implants (TAVI) and bio-absorbable stents, new anti-platelet therapy and improvement in our understanding of genetics, new generation oral anticoagulants, stem cell therapy, improvement in door-to-balloon times for ST elevation MI are just a few of the examples
The April 2011 meeting in New Orleans was a great success. Plans are proceeding well for the meeting on November 2011 in Orlando, Florida. Details can
be found at our website at We have lined up a strong scientific program, awards and dinner with Indian cuisine. Hope to see many of you there.

I am pleased to report again that your organization is going strong because of your involvement and I urge all of you to be even more actively involved by participating and by becoming members if you have not already done so. A record number of Fellows in training are joining the AACIO.

Sumanth Prabhu, M.D.
Sumanth D. Prabhu, M.D., is currently Professor of Medicine, Director, Division of Cardiovascular Disease, and Mary Gertrude Waters Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama. Prior to joining the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he held appointments as Professor and Distinguished University Scholar in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Louisville, Kentucky where he also served as Cardiology Section Chief and Medical Director, Heart Failure at Louisville’s University Hospital, as well as Director of Heart Failure/Transplant Research and Director of the Preventive Cardiology Clinic.
Dr. Prabhu earned his MD at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and completed his internship, residency and Physician Investigator Research Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. His Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship was completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
He is nationally and internationally renowned for his work on pathophysiological mechanisms in heart failure, especially related to left ventricular/myocardial function, chamber remodeling, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Dr. Prabhu is the past recipient of an Established Investigator Grant from the American Heart Association (AHA), and currently NIH R01
awards and a merit grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Kamini Trivedi D.O., M.B.A.
Kamini Trivedi is a Board Certified Family Practice physician currently working in Medical Affairs at Genzyme, based in Cambridge, MA. As part of her Medical Affairs role, Dr. Trivedi facilitates non-promotional medical scientific education as well as research engaging nationally and internationally regarded thought leaders in the field of lipidology and preventive cardiology. Dr. Trivedi's major leadership project areas at Genzyme include development of a Medical Affairs Sharepoint technology website infrastructure for real-time medical scientific information sharing and team collaboration. A second major leadership project area has Dr. Trivedi engaging top leadership of various Medical Associations as a scientific Medical Affairs resource, timely as there currently is a tremendous need for ethical, non-commercial and non-promotional scientific exchange between industry and Medical Associations. Dr. Trivedi has also worked in health care management and staff leadership roles at a clinical research trials company as well as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Valedictorian and winner of numerous scholarships, Dr. Trivedi is a Cornell University graduate, obtained her medical degree from the Ohio University, and completed her Family Medicine Residency at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, she has a MBA in Health Care Systems Management. Within Family Medicine, her passion is in preventive cardiology, lipidology, and ethnic health disparities in cardiometabolic care. Currently, Dr. Trivedi is pursuing an additional Board Certification in Lipidology.
Dr. Trivedi aspires to bridge the best resources of pharma/biotech with physician leaders who truly care about patients and transformative, quality health care systems that focuses on prevention.
